'Be among us'

This phrase appears three times in the installation service for pastors: "You have been called to be among us ...." They are apt words for you who will serve as the ELCA's third presiding bishop, our church's chief pastor. Be among us.

Your two predecessors heard and heeded the call of God and this church. Herb Chilstrom and H. George Anderson were good pastors, constantly on the road and in the skyways to be among us. Now the big gold cross will be yours to steward for a season. Bear it boldly, but wear it lightly. And take it to every corner of this great church of ours. Be among us.
