Where the church is called to be

World Council of Churches General Secretary and Norwegian Lutheran pastor Olav Fykse Tveit shared his difficulties obtaining a U.S. visa to attend the assembly. A concerned passport official asked, “Sir, why do you only go to the wrong places?” Tviet answered, “Because that’s where the church is called to be.” Through the ELCA’s membership in the WCC, Tveit told voting members, “you belong to a fellowship of sisters and brothers which needs you, and a fellowship which you need. … To be a Christian is to witness to the mercy of God and carry the cross … to one another … to those who live in the shadows. ... This is what we share as Lutherans [and] this is what we share with so many in the World Council of Churches.”
