Former NCC leader dies

Bob Edgar, 69, a past National Council of Churches of Christ general secretary known for religious bridge-building, died of a heart attack April 23 while at home in Burke, Va. Edgar, a United Methodist minister, led the NCC through a series of restructuring cuts. At the time of his death, he was head of Common Cause, a nonpartisan government accountability organization. Edgar was elected to Congress from southeastern Pennsylvania in 1974. He served as president of the Claremont [Calif.] School of Theology for 10 years before taking the helm at the NCC in 2000.
