Maryland: No death penalty

After calls from Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Jewish, Muslim and other religious leaders, Maryland became the first state below the Mason-Dixon Line to abolish the death penalty. On March 15 it joined 17 other states that have repealed capital punishment. The clergy had said capital punishment has been influenced by racial discrimination and minority defendants were more likely than other populations to be sentenced to death.
