At its gathering Jan. 14-17 in Yangon, Myanmar, the Lutheran World Federation Committee for World Service visited four of 50 villages where the organization works with communities to promote sustainable livelihoods. The ELCA is a member of the LWF, a worldwide communion of churches. The LWF began working in the area in 2008 after Cyclone Nargis killed nearly 140,000 people. LWF Department for World Service director Eberhard Hitzler told committee members that the likelihood of natural disasters remains a challenge for Lutherans, whose humanitarian response is affected by climate change, increased violent conflicts, the global financial conflict and more.
