$750,000 for seminaries

The ELCA's Eastern Cluster of Lutheran Seminaries (Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, S.C./Lenoir-Rhyne University, Hickory, N.C.) received a $375,000 gift from the estate of Dorothy Marple and a $375,000 grant from the Lilly Endowment. Marple, an assistant to the presiding bishop of the former Lutheran Church in America, played a key role in the ELCA's formation. The Marple Living Memorial Endowment Fund will provide annual funding for the cluster and the seminaries to provide classes on ecumenism. The Lilly grant will fund the third phase of the cluster's 7-year-old Project Connect, which has helped thousands of young adults discern their vocation and develop leadership skills.
