Delegates to the Episcopal Church General Convention in Indianapolis approved liturgical rites for same-sex unions July 10.
While many, like Episcopal priest Susan Russell, greeted the vote as a "step toward full inclusion of all the baptized in all the sacraments," others called the rites "separate but unequal."
Others, like Kendall Harmon, a theologian with the South Carolina delegation (which left the convention in protest) threatened to distance themselves from the larger church.
