Episcopal vote will be a defining moment

I don't want to hear any more about the historic episcopate. The proposal for full communion with the Episcopal Church at this month's Churchwide Assembly is to advance the church's mission. All of us can support that.

The truth is that we are missing mission opportunities because we aren't in full communion. The only ELCA congregation in Appanoose County, Iowa, is too small to support a full-time pastor. An even smaller Episcopal congregation is served by a visiting priest. The ELCA congregation has asked that a joint call be considered, but a decision has been put "on hold." Such a call can be issued only if full communion is adopted.
