John R. Houck Sr., 76, former Lutheran Council in the U.S.A. general secretary, died June 28 in Chautauqua, N.Y. The council was the global and domestic mission outreach agency that served the ELCA's three predecessor churches and the Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod. Houck was general secretary from 1979 until 1987, when the council was disabanded and Houck retired. Earlier, he served as executive director of the Division for Service and Mission in America of the former American Lutheran Church. Houck was a graduate of Capital University and the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary, both in Columbus, Ohio. He is survived by his wife Minerva, four sons and six grandchildren.
