Europe's economic and financial woes are the consequence of an "ethical crisis" and a "crisis of faith," resulting in the triumph of selfishness over social responsibility, Pope Benedict XVI said in his Christmas message to the Vatican's central administration.
Acknowledging that "such values as solidarity, commitment to one's neighbor and responsibility toward the poor and suffering are largely uncontroversial," the pope added that the "motivation is often lacking ... to make sacrifices."
