Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service reported lower numbers of refugees resettled in the U.S as 2011 came to an end.
According to the Office of Refugee Admissions for the State Department, revised security checks and measures have created a backlog of official clearance for entry into the U.S.
Terry Abeles, LIRS director for refugee resettlement, said various branches of the federal government must work "to implement a system that not only ensures the security of our nation but is considerate of the need to expeditiously consider all refugees in need of protection."
