The church 'must resist'

The church must resist "mean-spirited" state immigration laws, said ELCA Southeastern Synod Bishop H. Julian Gordy.

Alabama police can now stop anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant and Alabama schools must check students' immigration status.

In Alabama and Georgia such laws "are causing Latino immigrants, including legal residents, to move to more immigrant friendly states in the same way African-Americans left the South during the days of Jim Crow legislation," Gordy said.
