In July and August, the Lutheran Youth Choir of North America founded a weeklong Festival of American Vocal Music at Schloss Mansfeld in Germany.
Twenty-one American high school students with 19 German students rehearsed and performed American gospel and spirituals, and other American choral music in a restored medieval castle. In addition to singing in churches in Berlin, Wittenberg, Eisleben, Bad Frakenhausen and Dresden, and a retirement home in Mansfeld, the students visited the Buchenwald concentration camp.
Next summer, the choir will host a Festival of Global Vocal Music, July 29-Aug. 6, in Chicago, which most of the German students will attend, said founding conductor Philip Spencer.
