Minister suspended

Amy DeLong, a United Methodist minister serving in Wisconsin, was suspended for 20 days for performing a same-sex union in 2009, which violated the denomination's rules.

She refused to pledge to stop the practice during a four-day church trial in which a 13-member jury unanimously convicted DeLong of officiating a wedding for a lesbian couple in Menominee, Wis.

DeLong is openly lesbian and in a registered domestic partnership, though she would not tell the jury whether she and her partner had a sexual relationship.

The UMC Book of Discipline does not allow "self-avowed practicing homosexuals" to be in the ministry.
