Star Trek's Mr. Spock may be a Vulcan, but was he also Jewish?
It turns out that Leonard Nimoy, who has portrayed Spock in various incarnations of the 1960s TV show, created the hand gesture used as a Vulcan greeting from childhood memories of watching Jewish leaders during Orthodox services.
The sign is shaped like the Hebrew letter shin, which is the first letter in shalom, meaning peace.
"I didn't know if it would come in handy some day," Nimoy said to a crowd of several hundred at the B'nai Israel Congregation in Rockville, Md.
